UNIVERSITY OF RWANDA CALL FOR APPLICATIONS TO STUDY MASTER PROGRAMMES IN TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING

The University of Rwanda, College of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Arts and Languages, invites qualified candidates to apply for the Master’s Programme in Translation and Interpreting for 2022-2024 Intake to start in September 2022.

The programme is designed to train professional translators and interpreters. Translation and Interpreting are interdisciplinary subjects drawing on a wide range of disciplines including: linguistics, literary studies, cultural studies, politics and diplomacy, science and technology, finance and economics, law, medicine, etc.

The prospects of students with MA degrees in Translation and Interpreting are geared to meet needs of public and private institutions nationally, regionally and internationally. The programme is designed for students who desire to become highly skilled professional translators and interpreters for all different types of discourses, publishers, editors, journalists, public relation officers, diplomats, freelance translators/interpreters etc.

This is a full-time programme offered in a duration of 18 months (3 semesters) theoretical and practical classes are conducted during week-ends at UR-Huye and Gikondo campuses.

Entry requirements:

l. Bachelor’s degree (with minimum grade: Lower Second) or its equivalent, from various departments or faculties such as languages, law, economics, journalism, science-related disciplines, etc.

2. Proficiency in at least two of the following five languages: English, French, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi and Kiswahili. This will be measured by the results obtained in the entrance test (both oral and written) that will be administered to the shortlisted candidates.

  • A cover letter indicating for which program of study the application is being made and description of the motivation to join the program
  • A detailed curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Notarized Bachelor’s degrees and transcripts
  • Recommendation letters from at least two academic referees who are knowledgeable about the applicant.
  • Copies of valid identification card and/or passport.
  • Sponsorship letter from an organization (if any).
  • Applicants from countries where English is not the medium of instruction must provide an English proficiency certificate from a relevant body or institution in their respective countries.
