Traditional Rwandan big sieve

Big sieve known as Urutaro in Kinyarwanda language is one of the traditional materials used by the Rwandans. Big Sieves were woven in grass and in fine small trees.

Traditional sieves were used for sieving which consisted of separating good crops with bad crops. This is known as “Kugosora” in Kinyarwanda. Traditional big sieves were also used in exposing different crops to the sun (Kwanika in Kinyarwanda).

In traditional Rwanda, it was also believed that there were witches who should fly on big sieves. This was known as “kugendera ku rutaro” where a person should, during the night, move from one place to another by flying using the big sieve.
